Intro:

Reversing of marine diesel engine is a reversal of the rotational direction of the engine and thereby the propeller by changing the time of fuel injection, air injection and sometimes retiming of exhaust timing, or poppet valves. 

This is achieved by the repositioning of camshafts or having a separate reversing cam and moving the camshaft axially to bring it into position. A lost motion clutch may be used in conjunction with the ahead pump-timing cam alternatively. 

Marine engine reversing is the most vital procedure in the ships with fixed propellers in acquiring reversal thrust, attain deceleration, and gain astern movement. Engine Reversing comes into the most important role in preventing accidents and collisions at sea through crash manoeuvring.
