东方海外与雪佛龙合作完成生物燃料船舶首次试航

OOCL and Chevron complete first biofuel trial voyage

东方海外货柜航运有限公司(以下简称“东方海外”)宣布,旗下一艘4578TEU集装箱船——“东方横滨(OOCL YOKOHAMA)”号成功完成首次船用生物燃料试航,该生物燃料由雪佛龙新加坡公司提供。“东方横滨”号于6月26日从新加坡港启航,沿东南亚—澳大利亚(AAA1)航线,停靠澳大利亚多个港口后,最终于8月5日返回新加坡港,结束为期41天的试航。据悉,这是中远海运集团在其集装箱船队中首次使用生物燃料,这种生物燃料可以在不改变发动机技术规格的情况下被用于船舶,预计可在货轮使用周期中减少约15%至20%的二氧化碳排放。

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has announced that the marine biofuel supplied by global energy company Chevron Singapore Pte Ltd. was successfully tested for the first time on the 4578 TEU container ship OOCL Yokohama. The ship starts the 41-day trial voyage on June 26, set out from Singapore port, docked at several Australian ports in the south, and returned to Singapore port on August 5. This is the first time that the COSCO-owned box line has trialled the use of biofuel in its fleet. This biofuel can be used on ships without changing the engine specifications and is expected to reduce exhausted carbon dioxide by 15% - 20% on life-cycle analysis.

To decarbonize the marine industry, changes are needed both on board and beyond. As part of reducing carbon footprint throughout the equipment supply chain, Alfa Laval has signed an agreement with SSAB, to collaborate on the development and commercialization of the world’s first plate heat exchanger to be made using fossil-free steel. Global steel production accounts for 7% of the world’s carbon emissions. With a leading position in high-strength steel, SSAB’s upcoming fossil-free steel made with HYBRIT technology will be a breakthrough for the industry as it transitions to more sustainable operations. “Through our collaboration with SSAB, we will minimize their total carbon footprint,”says Peter Nielsen, President, Alfa Laval Marine Separation & Heat Transfer Equipment.

According to the International Windship Association (IWSA), at the end of this year, about 25 large commercial ships will be installed with wind propulsion systems, which will represent a total cargo volume of 1.2 million deadweight tons. IWSA estimates that by the end of 2023, as many as 50 large ships will utilize wind energy to carry cargo with a total tonnage of more than 3 million deadweight tons. In addition, 10 small cruise ships have adopted traditional soft sail technology, with a total registered tonnage of 50000. Considering the high fuel price and the considerable financial and decarbonization potential of wind power, wind power will become an increasingly attractive choice for ship owners. According to IWSA, the improved wind assistance solutions can save 5-20% of the ship's fuel use while the power requirement, with potential to reach 30%.
