MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Maersk A/S, an entity under A.P. Moller - Maersk, are to discontinue the 2M shipping alliance in 2025. 2M is a container shipping line vessel-sharing agreement (VSA) introduced by Maersk and MSC with the aim of ensuring competitive and cost-efficient operations in the Asia-Europe, Transatlantic and Transpacific trades. The 2M agreement has a minimum term of 10 years with a 2-year notice period of termination. The two shipping giants noted that “much has changed” since the companies inked the deal in 2015. Discontinuing the 2M alliance paves the way for both companies to continue to pursue their individual strategies. Maersk and MSC noted that this announcement has no immediate impact on the services provided to customers using the 2M trades. It said each company’s customer teams would communicate with their respective clients to support during and beyond the phase-out of the 2M alliance.

Tianjin Port Group and Huawei have announced plans to collaborate on building a digital twin of the Port of Tianjin in China. This cooperation builds upon the two companies’ existing partnership to develop digitalized and automated processes at the port for increased resiliency. The plan, which is divided into three parts, includes the construction of new automated terminals, upgrading of traditional terminals, and comprehensive digital transformation. At the terminal, container cranes operate automatically, and intelligent robots are used for horizontal transportation, guided by the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. This solution, which combines 5G and L4 autonomous driving technologies, has provided a new model for upgrading and transforming existing traditional container terminals worldwide, according to the port.

SAIC Anji, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China’s SAIC Motor specializing in automotive logistics business, has ordered the construction of seven methanol-ready car carriers. The deal has been split into two separate orders featuring Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels of 8,900 CEU capacity. Four vessels from the batch will be built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (CMJL Nanjing), and the remaining three by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), according to Clarksons. The ships will be conventionally fuelled and will have a Methanol-ready class notation enabling them to switch to methanol at a later stage. CMJL Nanjing is expected to deliver the first two vessels in 2025, followed by two more in 2026. At Jiangnan, the first two vessels are slated for delivery in 2025, and the remaining vessel in 2026.

Oslo-headquartered MPC Container Ships has signed an agreement that will see it take deliveries of synthetic Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) from INERATEC Gmb, based HKarlsruhe, Germany, starting in 2024. The synthetic MDO will be made from biogenic CO2 and renewable hydrogen. Due to its drop-in compatibility, synthetic MDO can directly replace conventional fossil fuels used today by existing vessels. With this agreement, MPC Container Ships and INERATEC aim to kick-start the transition towards carbon neutral, synthetic diesel in the shipping sector. The synthetic MDO produced by INERATEC can be used both in conventional combustion engines on existing vessels and as pilot fuel for methanol-powered new-buildings.
