Meyer Group, a global leader in cruise ship construction, has unveiled a futuristic concept of what cruise ships could look like in the year 2100. At the SeaTrade Cruise Global in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the company showcased their "Reverse" cruise ship model, which features drone landing pads, a closed glass facade, and urban gardening areas. The ship is designed to be powered without the use of fossil fuels, utilizing wave energy obtained through horizontal wings on the ship's hull, as well as solar and fuel cells and wind energy. Meyer Group also emphasizes the use of sustainable materials in the construction of the future cruise ship concept "Reverse." 90% of the materials used are recycled or can be recycled without leaving any residue. Additionally, the model already has a functioning fuel cell powered by methanol to supply the model's lighting with energy.

Lloyd’s Register has acquired a 50% interest in ISF Watchkeeper, the leading work and rest hours compliance software solution from IT Energy Systems and Consulting Limited. The acquisition will result in LR becoming a joint owner of ISF Watchkeeper with the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). The partnership that will combine the pair’s formidable compliance and industry expertise to improve crew and environmental safety standards in the maritime industry. ISF Watchkeeper is a suite of digital solutions that helps global ship operators to plan, manage and report their crew’s rest hours compliance in accordance with International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC). The software is used by more than 180,000 seafarers for calculating seafarers’ rest hours and planning work schedules.

The Korean shipbuilding industry is moving closer to achieving this year’s order-taking target based on stable orders. According to industry sources on April 5, the three major Korean shipbuilders took orders worth US$10.5 billion (13.82 trillion won), which is 33 percent of their combined order target of US$32 billion (42.11 trillion won) for this year in the first quarter of 2023. Korean shipbuilders are concentrating on boosting profitability by selectively winning orders for liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered carriers, which are regarded as high-value ships. Demand for LNG carriers, which are subject to selective orders, is expected to continue going forward. Clarkson Research, expected about 70 new orders for LNG carriers in 2023 alone. It is also predicted that demand will continue to rise with an annual average of 60 orders by 2032.

Shipowners and maritime regulators should aim for significant improvement in energy efficiency and cut fuel consumption by 2030 to align with the Paris Agreement’s climate goal to limit global warming above 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, maritime advisory service UMAS said April 5. In a study, UMAS — affiliated with the University College London — found the global fleet’s average efficiency would need to improve by 55%-60% from 2008 within this decade to meet the 2030 target. In March, industry group Global Maritime Forum also suggested shipowners can minimize fuel consumption by optimizing speeds and sailing routes. In its study, UMAS urged shipowners to focus on developing supply chains for hydrogen-derived fuels in this decade rather than for LNG bunkering — as only those synthetic fuels can lead to great GHG reduction.
