MSC Cruises took delivery on its newest cruise ship on May 31 promoting it as possibly the industry’s most environmentally advanced ship to date. The last ship of a previous class, the MSC Euribia incorporates new elements including the use of LNG as its primary fuel and advanced technologies as the company prepares to demonstrate the future with a four-day delivery voyage from France to Copenhagen. The voyage is being promoted as the world’s first net-zero greenhouse gas emissions trip for a cruise ship. The propulsion plant is designed to give her a maximum speed of 22.3 knots while also being energy efficient and reducing emissions. According to MSC, when in service, the vessel will emit up to 19 percent less greenhouse gas emissions per passenger per day than her sisterships which use conventional marine fuels. This amounts to 44 percent less greenhouse gas emissions per passenger per day than ships built only 10 years ago.

ABB has unveiled a new electric propulsion concept called ABB Dynafin. Inspired by the dynamic motions of a whale’s tail, it promises to reduce propulsion energy consumption by up to 22% compared to a conventional shaftline. The new propulsion concept features a main electric motor that powers a large wheel rotating at a moderate 30-80 rounds per minute. The combined motion of the wheel and blades generates propulsion and steering forces simultaneously, enabling what ABB says is “ground-breaking operational efficiency and precision” for ships. Initially available in the power range of 1–4 MW per unit, the new propulsion concept is particularly effective for medium-sized and smaller vessels, including ferries for passengers and vehicles, offshore support vessels operating at wind farms, and yachts. In addition, notes ABB, Dynafin delivers superior maneuverability, and positioning performance. ABB estimates that the first prototype will be available in 2025.

全球第一艘M350型浮式生产储卸油船——“Bacalhau”号的船体及生活区已于5月26日正式交付,标志着中国造船业取得了突破性进展。该油船总长364米,型宽64米,型深33米,共有22个货油舱,满载储油量为200万桶,其物量规模和尺度参数创世界之最,投入运营后,每天能够处理约22万桶原油。据大连船舶重工海洋工程大型项目团队副经理潘永泉介绍:“这是世界上首个应用挪威船级社(DNV)最新规范设计的超大型海工项目。”该船使用了钛合金管、耐热合金管、超级双向不锈钢管等多种长效防腐性能材料,使得这艘大船可以30年不进坞维修,仅需进行低成本的维护。
The hull and living quarters of the Bacalhau-the world’s first M350 floating, production, storage and offloading vessel-were delivered on 26th May, marking a breakthrough for the Chinese shipbuilding industry. The new vessel’s material scale and scale parameters make it the largest in the world, with a total length of 364 meters, a beam of 64 meters and a depth of 33 meters. It boasts 22 cargo tanks with a full-load oil storage capacity of 2 million barrels. After it is put into operation, the vessel will process 220,000 barrels of crude oil each day.“The new vessel is the world’s first large offshore project designed in adherence to the latest rules and regulations of the Det Norske Veritas,” said Pan Yongquan, vice-manager of the large project team of marine industrial products at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry.“A variety of long-term anti-corrosive materials, such as titanium alloy pipes, heat-resistant alloy pipes and super duplex stainless steel pipes, have been used,” Pan said, emphasizing that these made the Bacalhau a low-maintenance vessel and would allow it to meet its 30-year designed life without any dry-docking requirements.
