The latest ship to join the fleet of Ocean Network Express (ONE) lives up to its name. The ONE Innovation, on long-term charter from Shoei Kisen, is ONE’s first megamax, with another five slated to deliver soon. What sets the ONE Innovation apart, however, as spotted by box shipping watchers at Alphaliner, is that unlike all other megamaxes delivered so far, this giant magenta-coloured flagship features 25 container bays, with the Japanese liner making the most of recently installed windshields. All 24,000 teu class ships thus far have been 24 container bays long, and 24 bays wide. Designers at Nihon Shipyard in Japan managed to add a 25th container bay, which is 16 rows wide, onto the forecastle, atop the mooring deck of the ONE Innovation, giving it an extra slot capacity of 128 teu.

A staggering 81 percent of seafarers expressed a necessity for partial or complete training to effectively handle the advanced technologies expected to be deployed on future ships, a DNV study has found. Additionally, over 75 percent of respondents (Deck and Engine Officers 78%) indicated a need for training on new fuel types, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), batteries, or synthetic fuels. The demand for training on emerging fuels like ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol surged even higher, reaching 87 percent among survey participants. The survey further showed that 52% of seafarers (Deck and Engine Officers 53%) indicated a strong preference for in-person training at a maritime training centre or academy, with 23% that prefer a blend of in-person and online training. Almost 70% of respondents have used simulators, virtual reality, or other digital environments when undertaking training, of which 60% indicated such training methods helped develop their skills, while 10% disagreed.

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has completed the technological development for a cargo containment system (CCS) to be used in large liquefied hydrogen carriers. As explained, KHI designed and built a test tank to be used to verify the performance of a CCS for large liquefied hydrogen carriers, and conducted verification tests. In order to enable large-volume marine transportation of hydrogen, the hydrogen must be cooled to –253°C to be liquefied and reduced to 1/800 of its gaseous-state volume, and reliably maintained in these low-temperature conditions for long periods. To achieve this, Kawasaki developed a new distinctive CCS, CC61H type, for large-scale liquefied hydrogen carriers. It uses a spherical design to keep the outer surface area small relative to the inner capacity and minimize heat ingress. It also features a double-shell structure that provides high-performance, two-step thermal insulation.
