电子提单（eBL）不同于传统提单，它是无纸单证，即按照一定规则组合而成的电子数据。各有关当事人凭密码通过EDI（电子数据交换）进行电子提单相关数据的流转，既解决了因传统提单晚于船舶到达目的港，不便于收货人提取货物的问题，又具有一定的交易安全性，因而有着广阔的应用前景。
